What causes white/grey hair?
Melanin, a protein pigment in the 2nd layer of hair, decides hair color, and also protects us from UV rays. Deficiency of this causes white/grey hair. Genetics, nutrition deficiency, stress impact melanin levels.
How chemical hair colors work / damage hair?
- Chemical colors remove melanin to color the hair uniformly with synthetic colors. To reach melanin, they lift keratin cells of hair’s protective layer. This process damages the hair. They use ammonia, PPD, hydrogen peroxide to achieve this.
- Some colors claim to be free of those chemicals. But they use a different set of chemicals that work similarly and cause similar damage. Ex: Instead of ammonia, they use ethanolamine.
- Check for these ingredients: ethanolamine, monoethanolamine, MEA, PTD, toluene-2 5-diamine sulfate, 4-aminoaniline; 1,4-benzenediamine; p-diaminobenzene; 1,4-diaminobenzene; 1,4-phenylene diamine
- “Black henna” produces black from a chemical called PPD. Check the ingredients. Henna cannot produce black.
- Some brands show irrelevant ingredients on their products to look natural. But they have no practical purpose in coloring hair. Example: Amla, shikakai, hibiscus, aloe vera, almond oil, tea.
How does henna work?
Henna makes a permanent bond with keratin cells of hair’s outermost layer without damaging melanin.
How To Use This
- Mix henna powder, pure drinking water, 1/2 spoon lemon juice in a bowl and make thick paste.
- Let it soak overnight (about 8 hours) by keeping in airtight cover/container
- Apply henna to clean hair as oil and dirt obstruct coloring. Wash with shampoo or reetha, if required.
- Apply the paste similar to hair color.
- Keep it for 2 to 3 hours. rinse off with plain water. It gives red-orange color which darkens later.
- If you want black hair, apply indigo powder now.
Additional Instructions
- Henna quantity required depends on hair volume.
- Lemon juice makes the color virtually permanent.
- Soak in airtight container only as air makes henna loose its color
- Do not add milk, curd, oils etc. they make henna less effective.
- Sprinkle water when henna dries on the hair. Cover the hair with shower cap or repurposed cover, if possible, to avoid drying.
