About This Item

  • Known as aritha, Kunkudu kaaya, Norekayi, Ponnankottai, Urvanji in other languages
  • 2 kg whole soap nuts required to make just 1 kg of this products as seeds are removed and discarded. High-quality, easy to use, no clogging of washroom pipelines
  • Natural alternative to shampoo as soap nut trees grow without any pesticides, fertilizers
  • Ecofriendly as they are not made in factories, and completely biodegradable
  • Deep cleanses scalp, hair & gives rich lather as soap nuts contains saponin, a natural compound with cleansing properties.
  • Cleaning with soap nuts requires applying some pressure, rubbing, massaging, which promotes blood circulation to hair follicles, which,  indirectly, promotes hair growth & thickness
  • Protects hair from effects of chemicals in shampoos claimed to be ‘herbal
  • Herbal shampoos are not chemical-free. Though, herbs are shown, they have artificial preservatives, colors, fragrances, texture enhancers. many have negligible amount of the herbs (often, in milli grams). Check the ingredients.
  • Many ‘soap nut based’ shampoos actually use yellow color to appear similar to soap nuts. They rely on chemical cleaning  & lathering agents (Sodium laureth sulfate, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Cocamide MEA) and use very less or no soap nuts. Check the ingredients

How To Use This

Preparing the soap nut liquid (3 methods):

Method-A (soaking): Soak deseeded soap nuts for 8 hours, squeeze them completely in the same water. Method-B (boiling): If time is insufficient for soaking, boil the soap nuts in hot water for sometime and let the liquid cool off. Method-C(powder): Dry all the soap nuts in the sun for a few days till they become brittle, and make powder out of them using your kitchen mixer. You can store this powder for ~18 months and mix with water and use instantly as and when required.

Washing the hair with the liquid:

  1. Fully wet the hair with normal water.
  2. Close the eyes. Keep rubbing/massaging the scalp, hair while parallelly applying soap nut liquid drop by drop, to make lather. Apply it slowly to avoid draining it off.
  3. In 5 mins, you would get some lather.
  4. Rinse off with water, and repeat step 3 with the liquid. You would get very rich lather. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Additional Instructions

  • Actual quantity of soap nuts required varies and depends on hair volume.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. In case of burning sensation, which is normal, rinse with water.
  • Use hot and/or drinking water for soap nuts, if possible, for easy & better cleaning.
  • Don’t use too much water for soaking. Dilution makes the liquid ineffective.

Common Questions

Big soap nuts without seeds.

Yes. It does.

Up to 18 months when stored in airtight cover or container.

No, they don’t.

  1. soap nuts can NOT dry out your hair as your scalp has sebaceous glands which produce sebum (natural oil) required for your hair.
  2. Clean wet hair dries faster than dirty & oily wet hair. As soap nuts generally clean better than many shampoos, hair dries faster.
  3. Unlike soap nuts, shampoos have ingredients that make hair temporarily soft. But, such ingredients are not required as  your scalp produces natural oil.
  4. You can apply 1 or 2 drops of coconut oil, if required.
  • Many soap nut based shampoos actually use chemical cleaning  & lathering agents such as Sodium laureth sulfate, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Cocamide MEA, other perfumes, preservatives, colors.
  • Just for marketing purpose, they add a little extract of soap nuts, and colors, perfume similar to that of soap nuts. Otherwise, why do they need Sodium laureth sulfate?  In fact, even non-herbal shampoos, hand-washes also rely on the same chemicals. Herbal shampoos usually have negligible amount of the herbs, often in milli grams. Check their ingredients list.
